A local barber shop has teamed up with the Council’s youth service and local voluntary youth groups to offer free haircuts to young people.

Keen to support the community following the recent COVID-19 lockdowns and the current cost-of-living crisis, The Gentleman’s Barber, in New Oxford Street, set aside Sunday 15 May to offer their services to young people aged 11 to 19.

Camden Council’s Integrated Youth Support Service contacted young people who attend local youth centres and projects who might benefit from the initiative.

As well as getting a stylish haircut, the young people also learned more about cutting and grooming techniques, met visiting social media stars including an influencer and a stuntwoman, and received food and goody bags from Oh My Greek, Greek and Cypriot online grocery delivery firm.

Fashion stylist Natalie Care, whose partner Andreas Aristidou is Director of The Gentleman’s Barber, said: “Instead of organising a fundraiser, we thought we would give something back using the tools we have here at the salon.”

Natalie said the salon had previously worked with another London borough to offer free haircuts to young people from lower income households before joining up with Camden.

Daniel, 17, of Coram’s Fields Youth Centre, was one of the young people looking forward to getting a top-of-the-range cut for free. Daniel said: “I would normally only pay about a fiver to get my hair done – it would cost nearly £30 if I had it done here. My little sister sometimes braids my hair for me too.”

Young people were invited to attend from Coram’s Fields Youth Centre, Kings Cross Brunswick Neighbourhood Association Youth Project, New Horizon Youth Centre, and Camden Council’s South Area Youth Hub, comprising Somers Town Youth Centre and South Camden Youth Access Point.
