Waste storage and collection plans in planning applications

We adopted revised local area requirements in July 2018 and are currently in the process of updating this guidance page. Check the list of Local Area Requirements July 2018 for the most up to date information before submitting your application.

A waste storage and collection plan will need to be sent with your planning application:

  • where your proposed development will create excessive amounts of waste and rubbish.

The information below provides further details about:

  • when a waste storage and collection plan is required
  • what information these documents should include
  • how they can be submitted to us
  • where further information can be found.

When is a waste storage and collection plan required?

A waste storage and collection plan should accompany applications for developments that will create excessive amounts of waste and rubbish. For example, flat conversions, bars, restaurants and take-away food outlets.

What information should be included in a waste storage and collection plan?

This plan should show how safe and hygienic storage of waste and refuse collection will be achieved. You should show this on any scale drawings and plans or within the appropriate sections of the application form.

How do I submit a waste storage and collection plan?

If you apply for planning permission online using the Planning Portal, you can upload your waste storage and collection plan. This is after you have completed the relevant application forms.

Before uploading any files, please read our guidance notes for submitting electronic files with planning applications (PDF).

If you choose to submit a paper-based application instead, you will need to provide:

  • four copies of your waste storage and collection plan
  • four copies of the relevant application forms.
