Celebrating Ramadan and Eid

This year Ramadan runs from approximately 10 March 9 April. The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar calendar, so the dates of each month are based on when the crescent moon is sighted.

Ramadan is a very special time for many of our Muslim friends and residents.

Some people fast during Ramadan and wake up early to eat a meal before dawn: ‘Suhoor’ or Sehri. For many observing the fast, it is more than abstaining from all food and drink, it is as a way to be more conscious of God.

Iftar is the meal to break the fast at sunset, which traditionally starts with a date or water.

Many organisations are hosting community iftars, inviting local communities to break fast and celebrate together.
