Camden Council has launched a ‘Black History Season’ to celebrate the incredible achievements and contributions of Black people across the borough and the rest of the UK - with some exciting events for young people announced too.
Black History Season will be celebrated with a series of 'virtual' online events - including a free Black Young Entrepreneurs event on Thursday 5 November, from 6pm to 8pm.
As part of this, Camden Youth Council has announced they will be working with The Black Curriculum to bring their full educational offer for free to Camden young people.
The Black Lives Matter movement has impacted on so many of our young people. In particular, one of the critical issues raised during our recent virtual Shout Out events has been the lack of education around Black British history as part of the national curriculum.
Camden Youth Council has commissioned The Black Curriculum to deliver 12 sessions on Black British history between 15 October and April 2021 that will be available to young people who live, work, go to school or a youth club in Camden.
The Black Curriculum is is a social enterprise founded in 2019 by young people to address the lack of Black British history in the UK Curriculum. They believe that by delivering arts-focused Black history programmes, providing teacher training and campaigning through mobilising young people, they can facilitate social change. Their programmes, for all eight to 16 year olds, aim to equip young people with a sense of identity, and the tools for a diverse landscape.
The Mayor of London has recently tweeted his support for The Black Curriculum and encouraging schools to teach a more diverse curriculum around our multicultural history. We want to make sure as many of our young people have access to this as soon as possible. The modules, all consisting of three one-hour sessions, being offered in Camden are:
We will be hosting all the modules via Zoom (an online app). The first will be on Thursday 15 October, from 6pm to 7pm, and then every two weeks after that. Each module lasts one hour and young people can access as many of the modules as they like.
We will be starting with Migration (15 October, 29 October and 5 November) and then the young people can vote on which module they would like to learn about next.
Access to the modules is free and you can attend as many as you like. There are no tests or homework, these are sessions for you to listen, learn and enjoy.
