Making improvements to your council home

Internal works

If you want to make improvements to your home, you must:

  • have a secure tenancy
  • get our permission

Talk to your neighbourhood housing officer about your plans.

External works

Satellite dishes

We will consider requests for satellite dishes, but these will only be agreed to in exceptional circumstances.

We may remove satellite dishes where they're:

  • a nuisance
  • a health and safety hazard
  • on a listed building
  • in a conservation area

You should report satellite dishes in these instances to neighbourhood housing officer.

Security measures

You must get your housing officer’s written agreement before fitting a security camera, gate, or grille to your flat.

The London Fire Brigade advises against security gates or grilles wherever possible, as they can prevent their access or your escape in the event of a fire.

Gardens

If you have a garden and want to add a shed, conservatory or greenhouse to your garden, talk to your neighbourhood housing officer.

If your home is a flat or a listed building you will also need to apply for planning permission.
