Free and low-cost half-term activities for children and young people

It's half-term this week. Check out sports, play, youth and creative activities near you, running until Sunday 2 November.

  • Sports and physical activities. We're excited to announce that our school holiday sports programme will run at Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, Adelaide Road, NW3 3NF, this October half-term, as Talacre Sports Centre is closed next week for refurbishment. There's a variety of sports, fun activities and swimming on offer at Swiss Cottage - including the Multisport Scheme for ages 8 to 12 years. Children of all abilities welcome, all activities supervised by qualified coaches, with concessionary rates available - find out more and book. Meanwhile, Arsenal in the Community free football sessions are running at Cantelowes Gardens, Camden Road NW5, on 29, 30 and 31 October, for children aged 8 to 14.   • Youth activities. Check out October half-term youth programmes at local youth centres, ranging from cookery and pumpkin carving, sports and fitness to gardening, quizzes, tie-dye T-shirt design, spooky arts and crafts and a bowling trip. Find out more
  • Keep It Kentish Through Art - The Apex Project. This free interactive arts and crafts workshop, from 12noon until 2pm on Saturday 1 November, invites children aged 6 to 10 to explore Camden’s unique local environment through creative activities. Participants will experiment with textures, silhouettes, and local objects - starting with large-scale 2D doodling and transforming into 3D clay modelling. Led by Yoyo (Central Saint Martins – Fashion Design) and Martin (Royal College of Art – Clay Animation), this session celebrates young creativity and community connection.   • Keep It Kentish With Storytelling - The Apex Project. This free storytelling workshop, from 12noon until 2pm on Saturday 1 November, is open to all ages and designed to help participants craft compelling narratives. Learn how to build characters, structure a story, and express your voice with confidence. Facilitators Maryam (Kentish Town youth storyteller) and Richard (local creative facilitator) will guide you through writing prompts and examples from their own work. Whether you’re new to storytelling or already writing, this session is a space to be heard and celebrated.   • Keep It Kentish With Music Production - The Apex Project. This hands-on music production workshop, from 3pm to 5pm on Saturday 1 November, is for young creatives aged 16 to 25 who want to explore beat-making and sound design. Led by a young and experienced music producer, Kay, participants will learn how to sample, loop, and build drum patterns using digital tools. No prior experience required - just curiosity and a love for music. By the end of the session, you’ll have a mini project to share and the skills to keep creating.   • Celebrate with Keep It Kentish. Participants from the above three programmes will be invited to this closing event on Sunday 2 November, from 2pm to 5pm, for an afternoon of connection and recognition. Attendees will be served free hot food and free refreshments.
