Talented young athletes from 65 areas across the UK are invited to apply for a range of support, including financial help, access to sports facilities, physiotherapy, lifestyle mentoring and mental health aid.

Now in its 15th year, the GLL Sport Foundation has so far contributed over £14m and distributed 26,000 awards to support young talented athletes on their sporting journey.

The programme supports young emerging talent, with the majority of athletes aged under the age of 21 and the largest group under 18 years old. Across the programme, 87% of athletes receive no other funding or athlete support.

The innovative scheme is provided by charitable social enterprise GLL and a number of partner sponsors and expects to award £1.2m worth of help in 2024 for successful applicants. Already a popular and essential support programme for athletes, the Foundation is expecting heightened athlete interest as training, equipment, travel and other costs continue to rise.

All successful applicants will be given access to the 250 sport and leisure facilities across the UK operated by GLL under its 'Better' trading brand. Applications are open until 20 February 2024.

World class facilities that can be used by GSF athletes in training include Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s Copper Box Arena and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority’s White Water Centre, Ice Centre and VeloPark.

Over the past 16 years, GLL Sport Foundation supported athletes have excelled in major competitions and have gained 76 Olympic and Paralympic medals and 77 Commonwealth Games medals. Previous holders of GSF awards include Darryl Neita (athletics), Anna Hursey (table tennis), Charlotte Worthington (BMX), Alex Yee (triathlon), boxers Anthony Joshua, Aiden and Michaela Walsh, divers Tom Daley, Matty Lee and Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, swimmers Tully Kearney, Susie Rodgers, Tom Dean and Ellie Simmons.

Peter Bundey, GLL Sport Foundation Chair, said: “There’s still time for talented athletes across the country to apply for our awards and take advantage of a unique opportunity to reach their sporting potential. Previous athletes tell us the awards provide a lifeline to individuals who want to compete at the highest level as well as helping local communities discover the opportunities and enrichment that comes through sport.”

GSF supported para tennis player Lily Mills, 23 said: “I’m really excited about the new round of GSF Awards - for all young athletes out there like me, these awards can make a huge difference to us staying in training and competing at the highest level.”

Each year, every Director of Public Health publishes an independent annual report focusing on a particular health and wellbeing issue affecting local communities. This year, their report focuses on adolescent health and the issues that young people are facing in the borough.

The report was officially launched on 28 November at ‘Step into Our Shoes’, an event at LABS in Bloomsbury which was curated by ‘Camden Youth: Tell Them’, a group of local young people aged 16 to 21 to explore young people’s health across the borough and beyond.

Camden Youth: Tell Them co-produced ‘Step into Our Shoes’ as their response to this year's annual public health report. At this event they launched a graphic novel they created to illustrate key findings from the report and invited local decision-makers and health partners to take a walk-in young people’s shoes and to commit to working together to improve adolescent health in Camden.

Activities at the event included sports, affirmation writing, a word search challenge and audio recordings of young people’s experiences of living in Camden as part of the safety and violence zone. At the long-term conditions zone, young people challenged guests to test their lung capacity as part of an experiment on asthma to map lung capacity in Camden by postcode.

Guests were also asked to vote for which is the most pressing issue for young people’s health in the borough – physical activity, food and healthy weight was voted first, with mental health and safety and violence tied in second place.

Camden Youth: Tell Them also held the Council and partners to account in a lively panel discussion, asking questions including: "What’s the first thing you're going to do after this event to address the findings of the annual public health report?" Other discussions explored ways to improve health and wellbeing for young people in Camden.

Panel members included Kirsten Watters, Camden’s Director for Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Sabrina Francis, Camden’s Cabinet Member for Young People and Culture, Nigel Robinson, the Head of Sports and Physical Activity at the Council, and Chaima Hale, Start Well Clinical Lead for Camden.

Camden Youth: Tell Them said: "We’re glad that the Council are shining a light on these issues that are so important for us and other people our age. While some of the findings were expected, reading the report showed some of the harsh realities for young people in Camden and the need for urgent change. Through working on Step into Our Shoes we found out more about the services for adolescents in Camden and hope that more young people can find out about them and get the help they need when they need it."

The creation of the graphic novel and co-production of the ‘Step into Our Shoes’ event by Camden Youth: Tell Them was part of a paid training programme established by the Council in response to findings in the annual public health report, which highlights the importance of quality training and employment for young people’s health.

Key themes that were discussed at the event included young people's safety, mental health and wellbeing, healthy eating, the cost-of-living crisis, body image and inequalities facing young people.

Over 100 guests attended the event, which included a mix of young people, decision-makers and health partners from Camden.

The event took place in schools from 20 to 23 November, with local pupils then giving presentations at the Crowndale Centre on Friday 24 November to a panel of senior officers and councillors. Takeover Challenge offers a safe space for young people to express their opinions, challenge preconceptions on topics that matter to them and help shape the council’s policies.

Discussions focused on questions such as the impact of social media on young people's lives, online safety issues and how adults can support children and young people online. Children and young people challenged the room by asking: “If adults find it hard to switch off and stop using their phones, imagine what it is like for children.”

Children and young people also discussed why diversity is important and how the borough can “unite people and speak up for diversity”. The children were asked what they enjoyed most about growing up in an area as diverse as Camden. To which the children answered: “Without diversity, Camden would be dull, bleak and lifeless.”

Further topics included the cost-of-living crisis and its impact on mental health. Children and young people said that “almost half of children worry about the cost-of-living crisis” and the conversation centred on how the borough can further create safe spaces and support for families during this time.

Final debates included how can more young people get support and sustainable food provided at schools. The Mayor, Councillor Nazma Rahman, suggested children and young people help design the school menu.

Certificates of achievement were presented to pupils from Torriano, Brecknock, Kingsgate, Edith Neville and Argyle primary schools, as well as to secondary students from Parliament Hill School.

Camden Youth Council members gave a presentation on healthy relationships on behalf of Acland Burghley School, as well as chairing the event.

Councillor Marcus Boyland, Cabinet Member for Best Start for Children and Families thanked everyone in his closing speech and promised to act on the children’s ideas and feedback.

Andy's book, Billy the Brave: The World’s First Superhero, which was published in June, is set in the dinosaur era. The story follows Billy Gondwana’s nail-biting quest to rescue his brother from the Jungle of No Return as he battles some of the most deadly creatures on the planet.

As well as being an exhilarating adventure story, the book can also be used as a teaching and learning tool. Andy wrote it to include all the vocabulary, grammar and punctuation from the National Curriculum's Year 1 to Year 6 English Grammar Programme of Study.

During the summer term, each class from Reception to Year 6 at Rhyl Community Primary School, where Andy has been a teacher for three years, based their literacy on Billy the Brave: The World’s First Superhero. The children's work included rewrites of part of the story from an alternative perspective and a missing person poster based on the book.

Andy said: "My travels and my job definitely inspire me to write. When I was teaching in Asia, I was lucky enough to lead a five-day school trip where we camped in the rainforest. It was like having your very own living classroom. The experiences the children had, and their sheer excitement and enthusiasm, inspired me to choose a jungle as the setting of my first story. It was a trip that neither the children nor I will ever forget."

Young people attending came from The Hive Camden, Fitzrovia Youth in Action, Reactive Forum, FWD and Somers Town Youth Centre.

The Camden Youth Early Help Team, in collaboration with other youth service providers, embarked on two life-changing international volunteering programmes in South Africa and Morocco this year. These initiatives expanded horizons and nurtured a sense of global citizenship among those who took part.

The first leg took young volunteers from Somers Town Youth Centre to South Africa, partnering with the NW5 Community Project. The second journey led them to Morocco, accompanied by Connect Stars, Power Hub, Active Community Network, and Preston Manor School. Regular fundraising efforts led by the Camden team enabled these experiences and established collaborations with similar London-based projects exploring international volunteering for the first time.

Camden has a history of international volunteering in Portugal, Morocco, South Africa, Brazil, Bangladesh and the European Parliament. Over 140 young people actively engaged, forming lasting connections with charities abroad. Inspired by these initiatives, young volunteers raised an impressive £25,000 for the two 2023 trips while acquiring invaluable skills.
